FI/EN Gifts from the Sentient Forest -näyttely on avattu. Minulla oli kunnia pitää sen avajaispuhe. Kerroin siinä siitä, miten tutkimustieto liittyy muihin tietämisen tapoihin, kuten keholliseen, hiljaiseen ja paikalliseen tietoon. Tiedostamme, että tutkittu tieto ei kata kaikkea sitä, mitä voi kokea. Tutkittu tieto kuitenkin laajenee – esimerkiksi viime vuosina ja vuosikymmeninä on opittu ymmärtämään aiempaa paremmin, miten puut ja sienet voivat kommunikoida keskenään.
Tämä näyttely käsittelee kuitenkin myös puiden ja metsien vuorovaikutusta ihmisten kanssa. Osa taiteilijoista kuvaa omia kokemuksiaan ja kehollista tietoaan – sellaista, jota ei voi helposti sanallistaa, selittää tai todistaa todeksi. Me voimme kuitenkin hyväksyä tämän: voimme katsoa maailmaa kahdella silmällä – sekä tieteen että kokemuksellisuuden ja kehollisuuden valossa.

The “Gifts from the Sentient Forest” exhibition has now opened. I had the honour of giving its opening speech. In it, I spoke about how scientific knowledge relates to other ways of knowing – such as embodied, tacit, and local knowledge. We recognise that researched knowledge does not cover everything that can be experienced. Yet scientific understanding continues to expand – for example, in recent years and decades we have come to better understand how trees and fungi can communicate with each other.
This exhibition, however, also explores the interactions between trees, forests, and humans. Some of the artists depict their personal experiences and embodied knowledge – ways of knowing that cannot easily be put into words, explained, or proven to be true. Yet we can accept this: we can look at the world with both eyes – through the lenses of science and of experience and embodiment.
Warm congratulations to the artists, the project leaders, and Gallery Villa Vinkkeli. I highly recommend this exhibition to everyone!
